How to open jpeg error: "JPEG marker segment length is too short..."

I downloaded some images to cd off my D60 at a local lab. Error comes up saying cannot open because a "JPEG marker segment is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)" Any suggestions on way to retrieve them now??

Thanksnull

Find a freeware/shareware basic jpeg viewer software and try opening these files. I have found that some of these programs are not as "picky" about the files they are opening and will open files with missing or shortened "jpeg markers". The resave the file. You may find that when you get the files opened the corrupted data may show in the image.

Try opening it in PhotoShop.

At least in version 6, what will happen is that PS will load as much
of the image as it can, and everything below the corruption will get
filled in with whatever PS pulls in from it's internal memory heap,
which usually consists of a collage of fragments from other images
that have been opened since PS was started. The effect is sometimes
quite beautiful and surreal.

But... the basic idea is that some programs quit when they hit a bad
block and some don't. Find the ones that don't.

David,

If you have not yet solved this problem, I might suggest that this may be a simple case of you lab not being able to read the file name. Try downloading your images - through ImageBrowser - to a new folder. These will save as standard JPG's that can be read on any computer. Burn these to a CD for your lab.

Regards, Richard

Duane, Any suggestions of some of "not-so-picky" readers? Tried a few but no luck yet.

ACDSee is a pretty good program for viewing messed up jpegs. It also allows you to convert to another format (including tiff, jpeg, psd etc)

If you haven't already tried IrfanView, it's pretty generic, not too picky and saves properly. Also converts to about anything. Best part is it's freeware for non-commercial use. Download & info here...
